29 December 1864 — Dan-y-Graig, nr. Bridgend, Glamorgan
Thursday. 29th [December 1864]. Had breakfast in bed. Arthur not at all well. I sat with him for some time and his head seemed to get worse and he was rather light headed. The M. & I went for a walk down to the sea shore and then on to Newton Nottage to see the church which is very curious & has a wonderful old stone pulpit with a wonderful carving of the “Flagellation of Our Saviour.” It has also a curious old tower (square) with gables. We also looked at the well which rises when the tide is out & vice versa. I sat with Arthur some little time after I came in & he seemed rather worse. We debated as to whether we should go to the ball but at last decided to do so as we wanted to find out the best doctor and to bring Ivor back with us. The ball was great fun & I had a capital country dance with Theodore Talbot. We got home at 4.
