2 January 1865 — Dan-y-Graig, nr. Bridgend, Glamorgan
Monday. 2nd [January 1865]. I was called at 8.30 but did not get up directly and I & the M. had breakfast at 10. Arthur was not up but he sent to me in his room & we talked a little. He then got up to see us off and 1st showed me his cuckoo clock wh has a little trap door out of wh when the clock sings springs a tiny bird—flaps its wings & opens its mouth. We started at 11 and went by the 12.10 express train from Bridgend. We got into the carriage with Graham, Pen, & Dulcie Vivian & 2 strangers & had a very cheerful journey up. We took our luncheon at Chepstow & got a lot of buns at Swindon wh were too stale to eat. Near London we all dozed. At Slough we found snow on the ground but no traces of it nearer town. We got in a little after 6 and drove straight from Pad:n to Ex. Hse—found Con:, Blan:, Gran:, Temmie & Manky– I went to bed at ½ past nine–
