20 January 1865 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 20th [January 1865]. I went to the Racquet court and came in to lunch. I got teased because I kept my hat on at lunch. We went out again & I walked with Lady Nelson & Lady Alice when we met all the others & turned home. We had T at the upper end of the Hall & Lord Sandys fed us from an enormous packet of sugar plums. We had some singing after T. (and Arthur blacked as a negro & sang) & then I & Mary went to repose. I sat next to Theodore Talbot who was entertaining. At 10 the people began to arrive. The hall looked very gay & there were candles round the walls & candles in the niches. We had abt 167 people. I & Aug Lumley led the cotillion & we kept it up till ½ past 5 having enjoyed it exceedingly.
