4 February 1865 — Paris
Saturday. 4th [February 1865]. Breakfast at 10½. We went to the Louvre till 20 min: to 2 when I came in & Ivor went to the tennis court. At 3 Gertie came & fetched me & took me in her brougham. We went 1st to a bonbon shop (Boissier) and then to the Bois de Boulogne– There were heaps of people and it was very pretty & amusing. We saw 7 or 8 brides walking abt in the wreaths & veils wh is a most curious custom. It appears that in the lower orders it is the fashion to spend the afternoon of the marriage day at the Bois & to dine at one of the chalêts. We came home at abt 5 & Gertie left me at the door. Ivor & I dined at Durands and afterwards went to the Italian opera. We saw “Don Pasquale” & Patti sang beautifully & looked as pretty & fascinating as ever. We got home a little after 11. Saw Evy Ham: at the opera.
