10 February 1865 — Calais
Friday. 10th [February 1865]. We had breakfast at abt 10 & at 1 we went to the quay. Calais seems a very quite inactive town strongly fortified & one has to pass over a drawbridge to get to the station. We had a very rough passage & several people were ill but I did not feel it at all. We got to Dover at about ½ past 2 & immediately got into the train for London & arrived at 5. We went to Langham House but finding no one there & the house in confusion Ivor went to Longs & I & Monk drove to Ash: Cottage to Maria. My portmanteau was somehow or other lost so I had only a carpet bag. When I reached Ash. Cott: I found Maria gone out to dinner so I went to Ex Hse & there found the M. & Schrei gone out to dinner, so I returned to Maria’s, got some dinner & read till she came in at 11. She agreed to take me in.
