5 January 1867 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday. 5th [January 1867]. Monty went shooting. Read Lecky & learnt Morte d’Arthur in Bee’s room. The Ponsonby boys came down to ask B to go and skate. They brought Bee a poor rook or jackdaw (?) with a bad wing. We put it in a cage & fed it. After lunch Mary Pyne came & the 3 Ponsonby boys and Bee went in the brougham to skate with them. Mr Adye came to play the fiddle with the M. & stayed to lunch. I practised while Bee was out skating & did not go out as the E wind was blowing a hurricane. It put out the fire in my room. Bee came home at 5 & we had 5 T in the study. Mary Pyne had been stunned by a fall on the ice & Bee had come home at once. Dinner at 7. After dinner I played the piano & abt 10 we heard a curious noise in the library. On opening the door we found the pipe had burst & the water pouring in thro’ the ceiling. We quickly got out the furniture and then did ditto in the Queens, the Oriel and Arthur’s room. There was a fearful commotion & we didnt get to bed till after one o’clock, but the servants were up till past 3–
