6 January 1867 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Sunday. 6th [January 1867]. I had to sleep last night in Bee’s room . We were both so tired from last night that we got up very late and were hardly ready for church. I only got a snatch of breakfast. I stayed to the Holy Com: being the first Sunday in the year. I spoke to Pynes after & asked after Mary who was a little better but still stupified– I also walked up the garden with Mr Ponsonby. After luncheon I wrote a letter to Marie Tanitegines and went to church at 3. After church (I was there alone, Bee went to Mary Pyne) I walked up with the Pon: children to see Lady L. who was not very well. I sat with them till 6 when Cyril & Arthur took me home. It was very dark & raining so that we had a lantern. After dinner I sat talking to Monty in Luffs room till 11. Had a very interesting talk with him. Slept in Bee’s room again but found her asleep when I came up, as I stayed in the hall playing hymns to Monty after he smoked–
