8 January 1867 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 8th [January 1867]. Was very late this morning. Had breakfast in my room. Arthur left this morng at ½ past 9 to return to Brighton. He left me my ring with Bee to my gt delight. We finished Morte d’Arthur today. That is learned the last lines! A great accomplishment! Bee read 30 pages of Lecky. I then read some of Mme d’Arblay till lunch. Mr Adye did not come to fiddle with them, comes tomorrow instead. After lunch I practised till ¼ past 2 then read out a little more d’Arblay & some Columbus. At 6 Bee drove out in the cariole & I went for a walk & took “Chloe” who ran away from me & gave me a deal of trouble. I went to the Pynes where I fought at the battle with Chloe and then tied a string & led her. I went to see Mrs Whitelock at the lodge till 5 when I came in & had T alone in the Hall and then came to my room & wrote my letters till dinner. Bee came in soon after I did. Monty was out hunting today so I did not see him all day for as soon as he came in he had to go & attend a dinner of Wimborne Volunteers of which he is the Capt: After dinner I tried over songs with Bee & knitting & came up at ½ past 10. Finished “[illegible words]”. A vulgar stupid rather improper novel—!!
