31 January 1867 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset | |
Tuesday. [ca. 31st December 1867]. We were all at Canford in the autumn & towards end of Novr & beginning of Decr. I remember Henry Layard coming down to spend a few days. I was laid up with a bad toothache which came on regularly every evening & kept me from sleeping– Henry came down & brought the news that HM. Opera house had been burnt the night before & he had watched it from Atheneum Club. He went abroad from here to spend Christmas at Darmstadt. I went to town & stayed alone at Langham 2 or 3 months with Miss Kemble. | |
