30 January 1868 — Written at Langham House, Portland Place
Monday. [ca. 30th November 1868]. We were at Langham House for the season during wh Ivor, who also lived at Lang Hse, became engaged to & married Lady Cornelia Spencer Churchill. In the summer Maria, Richard & the children went down to Folkestone & took me with them to 6 Marine Parade a lodging house. I was very much out of health & was ordered sea air. Toward autumn the Du Cane family went home & Miss Kemble came down to join me & we went to another lodging at 67 Sandgate Road. There I remained till Novr. Blanche at Canford with the M & Mr S. & then went paying visits & B. remained afterwards at                while the M & S joined me at Folkestone in order to be present at Miss Kemble’s marriage with Mr Austin. She was married at Christ Church & Maria gave a breakfast at the Hotel. Monty came down for the wedding & so did Henry Layard. As soon as the breakfast was over Monty, Henry & I went up to town. I went on down to Canford the next day & Henry went also by the same train. It was the first time I had been at Canford since Ivor’s marriage & I hated it as I found everything altered & no longer a welcome and a feeling of going home.
