5 April 1869 — 21 Grafton Street
Monday. 5th [April 1869]. Hy & I spent most of morng in turng out some of his old drawers & then I wrote letters. Connie came over to say she cd not drive with me today but I was to take B: At 2 L came to say B: sent word she cd not drive. He stayed luncheon here. At 2.30 Mrs Burr called and asked me to go the round of the studios with her before the pictures were sent to the R.A. We drove in her carriage first to enquire whether Lady Somers had arrived in town then to Sir Coutts Lindsay’s. We found her at home but she said he was not going to exhibit this year. Then we went to Millais & saw his portrait of an engineer, a little Miss Lehmann &c. From there we went to Leightons wh I did not like at all except a St Jerome. Met there Hallé & his daughter also Miss Muir Mackenzie. Thence to Val Prinsep’s wh pleased me exceedingly—amongst other things he has a beautiful head of Alice Gurney and 2 small studies of “Dairymaids”. Thence to Watts where I chiefly remarked a lovely & curious thing of the Dove flying over the Flood. We then went to Mrs Burr’s where my carriage met me. I went to tea with Connie– There met B: & arrd to take her to the Opera. Went at 6 to Cornelia & saw her for the 1st time since the birth of the baby. Home & dressed for dinner—at 7. B: came & dined & we took her to the Opera to hear Titiens in “Trovatore”. L joined us there & I & Hy came home a little early leaving B: in L’s care.
