18 July 1869 — 21 Grafton Street
Sunday. 18th [July 1869]. Tremendously hot– To church at the 1st Com:’s pew at Whitehall in the morng. Mr C. Newton called & stayed luncheon. After luncheon I & Henry walked to Carlton Gardens to see Sir Mathew White Ridley. He & daughter at home. They showed us all their fine things, a gt many sculptures by an artist “Lough”—some very fine others equally good. He has many fine pictures—one of Penry Williams’ (his best, a procession) &c. We thence took a hansom to Little Holland House. Found a good many people there Dicky Doyle, Mr & Mrs Tom Hughes, Mr & Mrs Eustace Smith &c. Mlle de Peyronnet & I eat strawberries & cream together. It was delicious sitting in their garden. We dined at the Cowleys in Albemarle St. Met the Roystons—Bessboroughs, Bulwer Lyttons (He took me to dinner). I sat between Sir H.L. & Mr (Punch) Greville who was very agreeable. Walked home.
