19 July 1869 — 21 Grafton Street
Monday. 19th [July 1869]. We dined with Mr & Mrs Grote 12 Savile Row. Met Mr & Mrs Henry Reeve, Mr & Mrs A. Russell & Professor Calisch & Mr C. Newton. I sat between Mr N. & Reeve. The conversation soon turned on the Bible & Calisch seized the subject & expounded his ideas. How that Ruth was the only book wh was authentic—that Genesis & many others were mere traditionary & that he did not believe his co-religionists (the Jews) kept the Laws as strictly as is generally supposed. He was in the full swing of his conversation or discourse when Mr Reeve suddenly broke into a hoarse laugh & said “What you are saying, Mr Delish [sic], is most amusing”; “And very instructive” added Mr Grote in his stately manner. This did not suppress Reeve who got more & more odious. He turned to Mrs A. Russell & tried to make her talk but she soon cut him short and when he turned to me I snubbed him with a vengeance so he was obliged to sit & fume. After dinner a few people came in Mr A. Grote & his daughter &c & I made old Mrs Grote play the piano to us. She played an air out of the overture to Justin & then some Corelli from the figured bass. Henry had gone to the Hse and I went away soon after 11. Calisch left at the same time & passing Reeve in the passage said “Good night” in a friendly way but R. brushed passed him so rudely & quickly as nearly to annihilate the little Professor.
