14 August 1869 — Dôle
Saturday. 14th [August 1869]. We were called at 6 and breakfasted at 7. Afterwards Hy & I took a little stroll into the market where the women seemed chiefly selling cream & butter—& we looked into the cathedral wh was whitewashed & frightful & then jumped into the omnibus & went by 8 o’cl: train to Neuchatel. It was a most lovely journey thro’ the Jura & was the first time I had seen anything of the kind. Unlucky it was cloudy so that I could not see the view of the Alps. We arrived at Neuchatel at 3 & walked from the station to the Bellevue, a charming H where we got rooms over the lake—small & on 3no but still clean & comfortable. Table d’hote at 5. Sat near a bride & bridegroom and also a foolish old English man who would chatter all the time across to the bride & made a goose of himself. After we went for a walk in the town & made 1 or 2 purchases & saw a curious old Swiss house with tourelles & quaint corbels & the date 1590 in several parts of the building. We then went & sat by the Lake for some time & watched in hopes of the clouds clearing & revealing the Alps. But this never occurred but instead the rain drove us in. We sat at the open window looking out upon the Lake till 9 when I was glad to go to bed.
