15 August 1869 — Neuchatel
Sunday. 15th [August 1869]. We started in pretty good weather abt 10 from Neuchatel and went by train to Berne. We arranged to stay there 1½ to go and see the Clay Seymers who were there & Mr J. Lumby who is the Minister there. It rained as we got there and so we had no view of the distant mountains. We left Hill at the Station & got a fly, drove to the Bellevue where we found Mr Lumby was at his house in the country & the C. Seymers had returned to England for good. We drove round the town & then back to the station. Went by train to Thun. The rain increased & nothing of the views was to be seen. We got there in the pouring rain abt 3. We found the rooms we had telegraphed for—in the Pension wh was a great bore as we had to go to dinner thro’ the rain. We dined at 5. There were a great many people at the Table d’hote wh took place in a chalet in the garden. After dinner we sat by the open window till quite late & made our plans settling to go tomorrow to Chillon instead of to Lucerne. A man I sat next to at dinner told me he had just arrived from Lucerne & that the Hotels were all crammed & he had been obliged to get a room in a private house. That he had counted 47 carriages full of people crossing the Brunig so that we saw it was hopeless & gave up that way.
