27 August 1869 — Baveno | |
Friday. 27th [August 1869]. A fine day and the storm had passed over us. At ½ past 11 we went on board the steamer wh took us to Luino. We had a good luncheon on board and for the first time I liked figs. At Luino we got a covered carriage and had a most lovely drive of 2½ hours past 3 lovely little lakes to Lugano. We got to the Hotel du Parc at ½ past 5. Dined at 6. The table d’hote was full. After dinner we took coffee in our room and then went for a walk by the lake & in the gardens of the Hotel, we read the papers & had some lemonade & then went to bed. We did not get much rest. This is certainly the noisiest Hotel on the continent. Doors banged, dogs barked, men shouted & one cd scarcely sleep at all. I do not think I admire the lake of Lugano ½ as much as Maggiore. | |
