1 October 1869 — Monte Mellino, nr. Perugia
Friday. 1st October [1869]. Ct Conestabile kindly drove us to Perugia, a lovely drive of 1¾ hour. We passed olive trees & vineyards; the peasants were every where busy finishing gathering in the grapes and we passed quantities of carts full of grapes being drawn by those dear lovely white “bove.” We went to Ct C’s palazzo at Perugia & left the carriage there. Then we went to the “Cambio” where there are lovely frescos & beautiful old carved wood. We walked to Mr Waddington’s palazzo where we also found the Marchesa waiting to receive us & give us lunch. She is still very handsome tho’ about 65 now: she is very well preserved & is slim & youthful in figure. Just as we were leaving a man came with some lace (silk) & an embroidered cover (old) to see if we wd buy them wh we did. On leaving the Waddingtons we went in their carriage to the Università to see Ct Gian Carlo’s collection and arrangement of antiquities. We were there a long time & then drove round to see the facade of the church which is all in laid with Luca della robbia ware, we then went back to the Conestabile’s where we dismissed the Wad:’s carriage & returned home in the C’s carriage having a lovely drive home.
