10 October 1869 — Naples
Sunday. 10th [October 1869]. A lovely day tho’ not so hot. All the morng I read & wrote until at 12 Sigr Castellani came. Henry went out with him to the Museum but I thought it best to get a good rest and so I stayed at home & wrote. Henry returned at abt 3 and ordered me some luncheon. From our window we have a lovely view of the bay and also of Mt Vesuvius wh is only smoking slightly just now. While Henry was out Mr Bonham called & left 5 letters or packages wh had come by post. One was from Ld Clarendon offering Hy the mission at Madrid. There were also letters for me from Blanche, Grannie, Mrs Austen & Mrs Burr. Grannie alarmed me by saying she was surprised we did not refer to Mr Rate’s death– We had not heard a word of this & flew to the papers to see if it was mentioned there—but we only instead found a notice of Bertrand Gordon’s death at Sydney, wh is a very sad thing. We went out abt 4 and taking a carriage went for a drive thro the tunnel of Posillipo & over the tomb of Virgil. We drove a long way along this road and which was lovely but dreadfully dusty & came home up the winding road over the hill and along the road along the seaside. We got home in time for dinner at 6. En route we talked over Ld Clarendon’s offer & settled that H. wd accept it & he wd telegraph the answer tomorrow. We found ourselves next to Genl Christy at dinner, they are going from here to Malta. After dinner we both wrote all the evening till bed time.
