11 October 1869 — Naples
Monday. 11th [October 1869]. Breakfast at ½ past 9 & at 10 Mr Bonham called with more letters from it. Henry asked him to send his telegram for him & post his letters. We then went out & spent the morning in going over the ground floor of the Museum. There are most wonderful & beautiful things from Pompei & Herculaneum. The paintings from the walls of Pompei are most curious & some wonderfully fine & well drawn, such as I never could have imagined & the statues are beautifully arranged & disposed. At 1 we came back & I had some luncheon. At 2 we had a visit from Sir Fenwick Williams. At 3 we went to Sigr Castellani’s house and saw his collection of bronzes, ivories, marbles, majolica &c. He gave us a couple of modern majolica heads made by one of his sons. We came back at 4 to await the young Bonhams who were to call at that hour. They soon came & Mrs B. offered to take me shopping wh I accepted & we went & got my mourning for Bertrand & she then left me here.
