16 October 1869 — En route to Leghorn
Saturday. 16th [October 1869]. After a good night I woke & had some coffee. At 10 they had dejeuner à la fourchette which I took in bed & then got up & went & lay in my old place on deck which the good natured Capt: had had nicely secured for me. We passed Elba and had some lovely glimpses of the main coast passing close eno’ to distinguish Mr Sloane’s house at Volterra. We got to Leghorn before 5 & after we were anchored we dined. We did not disembark as seeing the weather was so fine we decided to go on to Genoa. It rained at intervals in the eveng so that we were obliged to stop below. But we were very comfortable as they had given Henry & me the ladies cabin to ourself which was roomy & airy. We had to wait at Leghorn to see if there were any mails to take to Genoa & started again at abt 12 at night.
