17 October 1869 — En route to Leghorn
Sunday. 17th [October 1869]. This morning I was awakened by Henry putting his head in at the door with “Get up, we are at Genoa.” I got up quickly and we went on shore intending to take the Cornice Road. It rained & blew so hard that instead of going to the station we gave up the Cornice & went to the Hotel Croce di Malta for some breakfast intending to go by Turin. In looking thro’ the list of visitors we saw the Mansel Talbots’ name & Mr Clark’s. Hearing they were still in the house we sent a message to tell Mr Clark to come to us which he did and said they were there on their way to the opening of the Suez Canal and were waiting for Mr Talbot’s yacht to arrive. We told him we had seen it come in just as we did. I then went up to Emily & Olive’s room & surprised them ½ dressed. It rained hard the whole day but the gentlemen went out of doors despite the rain. I stayed & lunched with the girls. At 3 it cleared a little so Olive went with Mr Talbot on board their yacht & Mr Clark Henry & I took an hour’s drive round the town wh I was very sorry not to see more of. At ½ past 4 Hy & I dined & we went off to Turin at 6 o’cl. Being Sunday I cd not go to buy my velvet dress so I chose a dark green pattern & gave it to Mr Clark to get & bring home for me. When we got to Turin we found the train to Susa which we had intended going by was taken off so we had to stay at Turin; we went to a little hotel outside the Station, had a little hot coffee & laid down for a few hours. At 4 we were called again & went by a 5 o’cl train to Susa.
