16 November 1869 — Blackheath
Tuesday. 16th [November 1869]. At 11 Henry & I left Blackheath & went by train to Charing X; there Hill & the servants met us with our luggage. The M & Schrei also came to the station to see us off. We went that day to Walmer Castle to spend 2 nights with the Granvilles. Met there Mr Robt Meade (Lord G’s secretary) Mr Charles Gore & Mr & Lady Georgiana Fullerton– The 2 latter only stayed to dinner & crossed over from Dover on their way to S of France. At dinner I was astonished by a Mr Pugin son of the great architect– He is evidently as mad as can be but was most amusing—laughed incessantly & often at his own expense & had a wonderful flow of spirits & talk. Lady Granville is confined to the sofa—so her mother Mrs Campbell did the honours. She seems very nice & it is very sad to see her totally blind.
