17 November 1869 — Walmer Castle, Kent
Wednesday. 17th [November 1869]. There was a thick white fog wh prevented one’s seeing the sea however near we are to it. Lady G. was not carried down till nearly lunch. After lunch Mr Mead drove me & Hy in a phaeton & Mr Gore & Ld Granville rode. It was a cold foggy drive & we could not see beyond the horses heads. We drove to Betteshanger where Sir Walter James lives. It seems a very pretty house but we could not see it as the fog made it so dark. We alighted & found Lady James at home & she gave us some tea after wh we quickly returned to Walmer.
