25 November 1869 — Bayonne
Thursday. 25th [November 1869]. After breakfast we had a visit from our consul Mr Graham. He said he had heard from Lord Howden begging him to go with us to Lord H’s chateau. At 12 we ordered a carriage & drove with him to the chateau. We were much disappointed when we saw it– It seems a most gimcracky affair—but it stands well and looks over the whole town. The house is full of Spanish ornaments & copies of Spanish pictures– In a little chapel is a tablet to the memory of his father & his wife & also his own with the space left for the date! We dropt Mr Graham in the town & drove on to Biarritz. We got there abt ½ past 1 & went to the Hotel d’Angleterre where we lunched at the table d’hôte wh consisted of 6 or 8 English women & one man– They seemed a melancholy lot & all coughed in a distressing manner. We went for a stroll about the place after lunch & went & sat on a little Knoll over looking the sea & watched the blue Atlantic washing up still angrily after the late storm. At ½ past 3 we drove back to Bayonne by the lower road & had a charming drive thro’ the pine woods.
