27 November 1869 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 27th [November 1869]. We arrived at ½ past 9 at Madrid & were met by the Embassy servant Espinosa who speaks French. We drove to our lodgings Calle del Arenal no 1 where the people are French & our rooms look into the Puerta del Sol a gay & busy scene & on the sunny side of it the whole population seem to be idling. We breakfasted– In the course of the day we had a visit from the 1st secretary Mr Percy Ffrench & later from the other Mr John Ashburnham. I did not go out but Henry went to see the Legation House. | |
