30 December 1869 — Madrid
Thursday. 30th [December 1869]. I spent the morning writing for Henry & also getting some books arranged. After lunch I went in the carriage to fetch Mme Riaño and we went shopping. We went to buy some canaries & also some cages & then to the Plaza Topete to the flower kiosk to get some bulbs. The man there told us we had better go to the nursery garden to choose any plants I might want, so we drove to the Puerta Toledo where there was the Quinta de la Esperanza & went thro’ the hot houses & chose some plants. I then took Mme Riaño home & came home as it was late & dark. I found M. Mercier calling and he gave us an account of the hunting expedition he had returned from on Tuesday. He had been of Prim’s party at his chateau near Toledo. He said that all the accounts & reports of the extravagance which had been circulated in the papers &c. were entirely false. The fun had been good but moderate. They were all awakened at 7 in the morng by Prim & his son going round the passages with a drum & bugle– They went out shooting from 9 in the morning till 5—Dinner at 7—& bed at ½ past 10– He said Serrano was very nice but Prim very much pre-occupied. After dinner we played mandola & I played the piano & at 10 I dressed & we went to the Regent’s. It was a very dull party. I danced with Cerro & Mr Rosty, & we did not stay late. No post in today.
