1 January 1870 — Madrid
Saturday. 1st January 1870. Did a lot of copying out for Henry all the morning. The birds arrived but did not sing very much. I gave Hill one of the canaries & kept a pair for myself & a mule canary. After lunch we went out in the carriage & called on Mme Riaño. Found her in and were delighted with the beautiful things she has in her house. We left a card on Olozaga & came home early. Mr Molony called & when he was gone Miss Whyte came as I had asked her to come & practice the hymns for tomorrow—but as Mr Whyte is ill & unable to do the service tomorrow we did not practice. She stayed & had some tea & went back in a cab; just as she went Mme de Martino came. She is the Italian secretary’s wife—a Swede & a very charming little person. She promised to come in on Monday eveng. Messrs Ffrench & Ashburnham dined with us quietly. We spent a quiet evening playing Mandola &c. &c.
