2 January 1870 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 2nd [January 1870]. No service. I wrote to Arthur Helps &c in the morning. Lunch at 1 and afterwards we went to a Concert wh took place in a room of the Opera House. It was the 1st of 4 quartet concerts wh are to be given. We heard Monasterio the 1st violinist of Spain. He played charmingly with great precision & in good tune. They played a quartet of Beethoven en “re” & then a man played the Moonlight sonata—very badly—after which we had one of Haydn’s quartets which was lovely. We met there Mmes Canitz, Karnicky & Riaño. We came away a little before & then went & took a turn in the sun in the Sqr before the Palace & then home. The Bauers called and told us that M. Weisweiller was detained at Victoria on account of the snow & that he had written word that he found there our messenger Capt Wynter and the French messenger who started on Thursday. We had a visit from Swedish Minister (Lindstrand) at tea time. At 10 I dressed & we went to Prims. A good many people there, the Merciers & the Dss de la Torre. We stayed there a little while & when we came away Henry told me that he had heard that the news had come today that the Duke of Genoa had finally refused the Throne and that the present Ministry were going to resign. We went to Mme Montijo’s & found a good many people there; we heard that it was true that the Ministry had already resigned & that Prim had been desired by the Regent to form another. Mme Montijo was very agreeable & charming and asked us to go to her on Thursday. We went home about 12. No post again today– | |
