13 January 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 13th [January 1870]. Henry’s head still bad. He did not get up to breakfast & I took Spanish lesson instead of him. Just as I had finished Espinosa came in and said a messenger had arrived from England. It turned out to be that a Mr Gosselin was going thro’ on his way to Lisbon & had brought us some things amongst wh were some letters from Maria &c. We went in the evening to the Opera to hear Africaine, did not stay late—as I had promised to take the Whytes to the Regent’s tonight so we came back to this door to fetch them & we then went on. The girls looked very well which was a great relief.
