16 January 1870 — Madrid
Sunday. 16th [January 1870]. We went to church in the morng. In the afternoon Henry & I went out for a walk. We had no particular object in view so seeing every one going in one direction curiosity prompted us to follow and find out what they were going to see. We walked on & on & on past the barracks up a hill on this side of the river and always kept findg more people going that way—at last at some little distance among the sand heaps we came to a large concourse wh turned out to be a Republican meeting and on a platform were ½ doz. men, one of whom was haranguing the multitudes. From time to time he was feebly cheered but the most of the crowd seemed not to heed him but to be enjoyg the warm sun & the charming view looking down on one side over the valley with its river & railway to the Casa de Campo & to the right the distant mountains tipped with snow. When we had satisfied our curiosity & admired the orderly crowd some of wh were sitting abt in groups eating oranges, piñones or their luncheons, we sauntered home. In the eveng we went to Prims—Mme Montijo does not receive tonight the 16th being the anniversary of the Dss d’Alba’s death. Saw Mme Karnicky & Dss de la Torre there.
