24 February 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 24th [February 1870]. I had a headache which I did my best to struggle against. Brehm came to see Henry in morng. Before luncheon I was obliged to give in & go & lie on my sofa in my room & could not go & fetch Mme Riaño as I had arranged. She came at 5 with her father & brought me some flowers. Vicente from Soriano’s came with the plates & tables to show Henry but asked too much for them & so we bought nothing. Tho’ we were both very unwell we made an effort & went to dine at the Osmars (Los Marqueses de Puente Sotomayor). A great long dinner met Comyns; Bedmars, Vizconte del Ponton &c. Marquis de Bedmar took me into dinner & I sat between him & Mr Osmar: a pleasant dinner. Afterwards there was dancing, M. Esperanza playing the piano. I danced a quadrille & then we went away as Henry still felt ill.
