28 February 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 28th [February 1870]. I did a lot of copying in the morning for Henry & wrote some letters. It was still a showery day & began to rain just abt 3 so that Mme Bauer did not come to take me out– However I went in our carriage with Henry & Mr Ffrench to the Bauers & they left me there & I waited while her carriage was being got ready & saw her 2 children. Henry & Mr Ff. went on to pick up Mrs Hunt & took her to the Prado & I & Mme Bauer went together in her barouche & took one of the 2 passes Henry had. There were rather more masks—but not very many—& a good deal of mud. We had Mme Aylton & her 2 daughters M. de Montgomery, Mr R. Silvela, Mr Argaiz & Messrs Ff: Ash: & Sey: to dinner– In the evening a few people came but not many as there was a party at the Villaseca House– I played a little at “Quinze” wh M. de Martino tried to teach me–
