21 March 1870 — Madrid | |
Monday. 21st [March 1870]. Henry told me in the morning that he had heard a good deal of news at Montijo’s. That Topete had resigned & that there had been a great fuss at the Cortès on Saturday. Figuerola had proposed to sell some Govt property that Silvela had proposed an amendment at which Prim had said if the Govt did not carry the measure they would resign—at this Topete rose from his seat—shook hands with the government & went & took his seat among the Union Liberals. The Govt had a majority of 7. There is great excitement about the whole thing. I took my Spanish lesson & told old Marquez that we should discontinue our lessons as my mother was coming. Did a deal of writing for Henry & attended to the arrangement of the M’s & S’s rooms. At ½ past 3 I went to fetch the Aylton girls & took them for a drive in the Casa de Campo. We had usual dinner party the Bauers, Senr Ramon de Navarrete, Mr Corvo, Messrs Ff. & Sey: Senr Palmaroli the Hunts & Mr Pedro de Prat. In the evening a good many people came & we had a good deal of music & a M. Como who played the guitar a prof: Mme Figuera played & we dispersed at 12½. We made an arrangement that Palmaroli should paint my picture. | |
