23 March 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 23rd [March 1870]. Breakfast at ½ past 9. Afterwards the M & S went out china hunting with their courier & I spent the morning writing & making up parcels to go by the Messenger. At 3 we went out in the carriage & went first to Zuluaga’s (the great metal inlayer) & he showed us all his china. He has specimens of all the Spanish china as he is studying the subject with a view of set up in manufactory. Having examined all his things we went to pay a visit to the Riaños & she exhibited all her treasures. We afterwards took two turns in the Fuente & then home to tea. After tea the Hunts called & I asked them to come in the evening wh they did & Messrs Sey: & Ash: dined. Mrs Hunt tried to sing in the eveng but was out of voice. To bed abt 11–
