26 March 1870 — Madrid
Saturday. 26th [March 1870]. This morning Mr S. strolled out & when he came in said a man in the street had told him there had been someone murdered; we sent out Espinosa to see & he came & told us that an old Lady an aunt of our friends the Marqueses de Molino, who was very rich & very avaricious had been murdered in her bed at 6 o’cl: this morning & the maids were found bound down. The M & S. went to see over the Palace & after lunch they went in the carriage to the Gallery but forgot to send the carriage for me until they came out to go to the Cortès. However I got the carriage about 4 and went to fetch Mme Riaño but as it was very windy we soon came home. The Ayltons & Mme Bauer called & gave some more details of this morning’s murder. Mr Ash: came to tea also M. Riaño. We dined at 7 & went afterwards to the Opera. We heard “I Puritani”– A Mexican woman called Peralta sang also Tamberlick & it was pretty good on the whole.
