5 April 1870 — Madrid
Tuesday. 5th [April 1870]. At 12 Henry & I went to Palmaroli’s for me to sit for my portrait. In the afternoon at 3½ Cerruti came to help to amuse the children who came to play viz—Juan & Isabel Prim—Pepita Serrano (the Regent’s child), Mme Acapulco’s 3 eldest—Mme Bauer’s little boy, Mme Comyn’s youngest boy & Mme Riaño’s Juanito– We amused them all the afternoon & the games were all arranged beforehand by Cerruti. The principal one was the breaking the “marmitas”– Each child had its eyes bound in turn & a stick put into his hands with which he was to break a little earthen ware jug wh was previously filled with dry fruits in the midst of which was a ticket with a number. It was very absurd to see them hitting about at random but when they succeeded in breaking la marmita—the fruits were their property & the ticket gave them a claim to a present with the corresponding number. We played many other games & I did the “Growing housemaid” wh amused them very much. They had cake & Meringues & went away abt 7 we being all very tired & I having a headache. Henry & I were alone at dinner and I was obliged to go off to bed very early on acct of my head.
