6 April 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 6th [April 1870]. I got up rather late & it seemed cold so that I had a fire to get up by. In the afternoon it cleared & became lovely & Henry & I went for a drive in the Casa de Campo. We saw all kinds of birds some hoopoes with pink bodies, striped black & white wings and crests on their heads. We also saw magpies, hawks, cuckoos & even a small owl sitting blinking in the sun—also an enormous green lizard & an unfortunate little bat. We dined alone & spent the evening quietly playing Mandola & I sang.
