7 April 1870 — Madrid | |
Thursday. 7th [April 1870]. I took my Spanish lesson & then wrote some letters & at 12 went and sat to Palmaroli till 2 and then I did not go out any more & sat reading but was interrupted by visits from Mr Ash: & then Mr Ffrench who came to see if we would give them dinner & Mr Ff stayed to tea. They dined with us and we afterwards went to the Opera to Tamberlick’s benefit. The House was crammed wh. was a pretty sight but I did not much care for the music as disjointed pieces & single scenes are always tiresome. He had plenty of crowns &c thrown to him & a Moor’s casque handed to him after Othello & Mr Ff: who had been between acts to see him said he had several valuable presents sent to him amongst others a nice jewel from the Regent’s wife. | |
