14 April 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 14th [April 1870]. Got up a little earlier and at ¼ to 10 Genl Williams arrived from Burgos and breakfasted with us & then went to rest & I went down to church being Holy Thursday; we had prayers & afterwards we stayed & practised the hymns for next Sunday. It appears that it has long been the custom here not to take out any carriages these 3 days that is to say today after 10 till Saturday after 12 so we made up our minds either to stay at home or to walk. We saw a stray carriage was out so we said after luncheon we thought we might go for a drive out of the town so we went to the Casa & went by the same road as we went yesterday & the Genl was immensely pleased with the view & the place. We got out & walked a little way & enjoyed it very much. Mr Elwes a Norfolk clergyman called on Henry this morng & he asked him to dinner & Messrs Ash & Sey: also dined—we did not sit up late as the Genl was tired. Mr Elwes is a wonderfully clever amateur artist & has travelled nearly all over the world sketching. I did not care very much about him & he appeared to me somewhat supercilious—but I may be mistaken & deceived by his manner, I got on pretty well with him as we had a subject in common, he being a cousin of the Hamonds of Westacre whom I know very well. He is stout rather good looking & slightly lame.
