22 April 1870 — Madrid | |
Friday. 22nd [April 1870]. The M. & S. left on their way to England; they were to spend the day at the Escurial & go on to Burgos getting there at 2 in morning. Mr A. Cole & Mr Campbell came to lunch & we spent a long time painting the Easter eggs for the childrens party tomorrow. They took leave of us & went away abt 4. I expected Cerruti to come & settle tomorrow’s entertainment but he did not come so we went out driving with Mr Cole & the Genl & left P.P.C. cards for them & took them to the Cortes & then took farewell of dear old King Cole & left him at his hotel & he & the Genl were to go to the theatre together to see “Pan y Toros”. We went home & dressed for dinner & went to dine with Los Marqueses de Bedmar to a library & conservative dinner given on Henry’s account. We were 14 at dinner & it was very agreeable. There was a party afterwards but we did not stay very late. | |
