1 May 1870 — Seville
Sunday. 1st May [1870]. I wrote letters or tried to do so—as Mr Reade the consul at Cadiz came to see Henry & had a long talk with him & Mr Will: came at 12 to take us out. We started at 1 & went first & had some luncheon at the Café Universal & then we went on to see the Palace of San Telmo. There were some lovely pictures there & some masterpieces of Zurbaran. The Duke seems to have a good deal of taste & the whole palace was very prettily arranged. By his orders we were shown the private apartments wh are nice but have nothing very striking & we did not linger for fear of meeting the Duc wh Henry particularly wished to avoid as it would be sure to be said it was a meeting with some political significance. We enjoyed a walk thro’ the gardens with a most civil French head gardener & by the Duc’s orders he presented us with bouquets of roses. The climate for nearly every kind of plant seems admirable & the growth of trees seems wonderful– Trees of 20 & 30 ft high he assured us he had planted himself 15 or 17 years ago. We found our carriage at an upper gate & went to La Caridad wh is a kind of hospital then took a drive round the town to see the Moorish walls & dropped Mr W. near his house & then went home. He & his wife came & dined with us & we dined in our room. In eveng the W’s went to the Opera so left us early & we wrote letters & read the papers all about the shocking massacre of those English people taken by the Greek bandits–
