9 May 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 9th [May 1870]. When we found ourselves at Madrid & the carriage to meet us– We found the house looking clean & comfortable & in our absence Hill had had the winter curtains taken down & the carpets up so that the matting looked clean & cool & nice. On arriving we took a cup of tea & went to bed for 2 hours & then got up to breakfast at 10½. We found several letters—waiting amongst others a very bad account of poor Grannie who seems very ill—& we are very anxious. I began to write some letters but did not get on very fast as first came Mr Gayangos to call to tell us that Mme Riaño was confined last Saturday & has another son—as soon as he was gone Lady Ely came with Lady G. Hamilton. Lady Ely came to say good bye as she returns today to England & Lady G came with her being alone as the Blandfords had gone to spend the day at the Escurial. So I offered to take her out driving later & bring her back to dine. Then Col Smith called to say he was going to England in 2 days, then Mr Ffrench came. We had tea at ½ past 4 & then at 5 went out & went first to the H. des Princes to fetch Lady G. & then drove in the Casa de Campo & came back to dinner by 7. I am afraid that after dinner we were neither of us very good company for Lady G. as after our last night in the train we were very sleepy & were glad to get to bed early.
