16 May 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 16th [May 1870]. I had a letter from the M giving news of poor Grannie who seems to be very ill indeed of heart complaints. I had also a letter from Connie. I wrote to her & also the invitations for the dinner we are going to give on 28th to the English to celebrate H. M’s birthday. Cerruti came to see Henry & also M. Ojedra who promised to bring us some letters & directions abt Toledo. I read after lunch & at 4 we went off the the Bullfight the Regent having given us tickets for his box. There were M. & Mme Juan Valera del Como & several others—as the preceding time I went away directly the Bull was let in & so did Mrs Burr for who’s sake I went this 2nd time. We drove down to the Quinta Esperanza & got some plants for my patio but a thunderstorm coming on obliged us to go home as soon as we could. We had a small dinner party consisting of Senr Sagasta, Topete, Mercier, Eduard Saavedra & Pedro Madrazo and afterwards Silvela came in also Cerruti & Mr Riaño & we had a very pleasant evening all sitting & chatting & looking over the Arundel prints–
