22 May 1870 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 22nd [May 1870]. I wrote to Grannie who is getting better but still very ill. At Church we had an American Bishop of Minnesota to preach & the church was consequently full of Americans. The Bp. & Mr Whyte & Mr Adye (U.S. secretary) came up after the service & the Bp. reminded us he had seen us in Cordova cathedral wh we remembered—a tall thin long faced, long haired smooth shaven man who spat constantly during the service. He gave us a good short sermon. We had tea at 5 & then went out driving to the Fuente & left a few cards & then came home– The Hunts, Mr Riaño & Mr Seymour dined with us– While sitting talking in the evening Hy got a telegram from Gibraltar Sir Rd Airey, to say 2 English men Messrs Bonell had been taken by brigands– Immediately Henry remembering the late dreadful tragedy in Greece, hurried off to send word to Mr Sagasta (Minister of F. Affairs). The messenger found him at the Opera & delivered Henry’s note. Nothing else having to be done we went to bed & had not been in bed 5 minutes before Giovanni knocked us up to say Sagasta & Mr de Blas (Under Secretary) were here. Henry quickly dressed & went to them. They came to express their despair & to promise that every thing possible should be done– | |
