23 May 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 23rd [May 1870]. A messenger (Mr Conway Seymour) arrived from England, but he had been sent off suddenly & so brought me nothing. Cerruti came also rushing to see Henry on some Morocco business & brought me a couple of lovely roses. Palmaroli came & said he wd not give me a sitting today so I employed my leisure in writing a long letter to Maria all about Toledo & also wrote for Henry. Mr Riaño lunched & again talked of going to Zaragoza for the S. Kensington Museum to purchase some of the “Pilar” jewels. At 5½ I went in the carriage to fetch the d’Aylton girls & we drove to the Casa de Campo & Henry & Mr Hunt rode & met us there. After dropping the girls I went to leave a message at Mme Riaño’s & also to see Mme Lesseps about the Canning boy who is at school at Alcalà & whom we can not afford to keep there—& then got home a little late for dinner. We were alone. I went to bed early but Henry who is anxious abt this brigand affair went off to the Cortès to see Sagasta and to talk it over & did not come home till half past 1–
