30 May 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 30th [May 1870]. I went to sit to Palmaroli from 10 till 12 with Mrs Burr. We came home & I put on a black silk & a mantilla & went to be photod. We came home before lunch & I wrote for Henry & afterwards I & Francesca the chica arranged the back drawing room carrying in a good deal of the furniture. Mr Routledge who is going back to Cordova came to say good bye. After 5 tea went out riding but thunder still threatened & we could not go far. We met Mr Sey. riding in the Casa– After dinner we all 3 went in to the Bauers where we met Ct & Css Cahen (she née Miss Spartoli). She is pretty & delicate but has too large a nose—he is repulsive looking with weak eyes. Just before we went there the Hunts came in to bid us goodbye as they are going off tomorrow to La Mancha.
