1 June 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 1st June [1870]. I wrote letters till ½ past 11 when we had the carriage & Mrs Burr & I went out—I to see Mme Riaño & then to join Mrs B at the Picture Gallery. We met Mr Molony & he went with us to show us the pictures. I had some writing to do for Henry on my return. Having a headache I sat reading & working till tea. A very curious person came to call whom Henry saw; her card was Mme Frizoni Windeler de Windeck. The door being open I could hear her & she told Henry she was sickly & alone & knew no one here & wanted somewhere to spend her evenings & asked to be introduced to me. This Henry avoided & asked her for her letters of introduction of wh however she had none nor a passport. She said her father had been German her mother Portuguese—but that she was English having been born in England; after some difficulty Henry got rid of her. We went out riding at 6 in the Casa & met the Dss & Regent & children, Mercier & Brosé & were a large party. I was obliged to go to bed soon after dinner my head being bad–
