5 June 1870 — Madrid
Sunday. 5th [June 1870]. We were rather later this morning. Mr Whyte being away at Linares we had no church– I read & wrote for Henry as he had a good deal to send to England. Col. Mallet came to luncheon to bid us good by as that party leave en route for Biarritz today. It was very hot so I sat quietly reading in the drawing room– Mme de Molino came to call & also the Austrian Minister. There was a demonstration in favour of Epartero—or at least against Montpensier. Henry went to see it. Said it consisted of the working men walking in procession with bands of music. While he was out I laid down & read the service. Mr Sey: dined with us Mr Ash: having gone shooting vultures at the Escurial. At 10 we went to the Prim’s as they are at home on Sunday nights & from there on to Genl Sickles where there was a ball, being Miss Sickles’ birthday– I sat & talked to Mrs Hamilton the Times Corres:’s wife, but we did not stay late–
