6 June 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 6th [June 1870]. Henry took me to Palmaroli’s at 10 & fetched me home at 12. Henry & I tried to do Giovanni’s accounts & sat doing them till nearly 5 when the 1st secretary of the French legation Mr Bertholdi came to call. He is a tall stout goodnatured looking agreeable man. After him came Mme de Martino & had tea with us after wh Henry & I took a drive & went to see the Riaños & asked them to tea in the evening also invited several others. We went home at 7 as it was cold & windy & dusty. After dinner the De Martinos Cerruti & P. Madrazo came but not the Canitz. The sudden change made my head ache & I was glad when they were gone to rush to bed. Cerruti stayed to talk business to Henry & they talked a long time.
