8 June 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 8th [June 1870]. Henry had a great deal of writing for me today. News of the Bonells’ safety confirmed & that after receiving the ransom 4 of the brigands on the road to Seville were attacked by the guardia civil who had watched the whole time & 3 brigands were shot dead only one escaping. Abt £700 of the money was found in the dead mens girdles but they cant tell what has become of the rest the ransom having been £5,500. Read in the afternoon. Rode with Henry alone & expected to find Mrs Burr returned from Segovia when we came in. She came soon after 8 in time for dinner.
